June 10 -- Captain Thurmond's Triathlon
This world-renown festival of athletics includes a 5K run, a 5K walk, children's events, and its namesake triathlon -- a race through the New River Gorge covering a twelve-mile bike route, an eight-mile whitewater journey, and a seven-mile ascent from the depths of the gorge to the finish in Fayetteville.
July 1-4 -- 100th Anniversary Weekend
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building of the White Horse with an open house that coincides with Fayetteville's New River Gorge Heritage Festival. Special White Horse events include house tours and carriage rides through the historic district. Festival highlights include live music, a parade, a carnival, and a large July 4 fireworks display.
August 2-6 -- Appalachian Stringband Music Festival
Every summer, Mountain State masters are presented to an audience of more than 3,000 musicians and string-band music lovers from around the world at this camp less than half an hour from the White Horse. The gathering includes contests, concerts, workshops, and square dances. Famous musicians are known to regularly attend this festival incognito.
